Level 1 Award in Wines

The WSET® Level 1 Award in Wines prepares students for an entry-level job in hospitality or retail. This course is designed for people who serve or sell wine in restaurants, hotels, bars and bottle shops.

It covers the basic product knowledge and skills about wines and how to sell them. Your professional skills in sales and your knowledge of wines will be improved. This will increase your ability to assist your customers and improve wine sales for your employer.

The program is also an excellent introduction for the wine enthusiast who wants to learn more about wine styles, storage, service, and unlock the secret to matching the perfect wine with food. Confidently order wine from a restaurant wine list that will pair perfectly with your meal.

On successful completion, you will be issued with an internationally recognised certificate: Level 1 Award in Wines from the globally acclaimed, UK based, Wine and Spirit Education Trust.

The WSET® Level 1 Award in Wines prepares students for an entry-level job in hospitality or retail.

Course Duration: This qualification has a minimum requirement of six hours of guided study time with a 45-minute closed-book multiple-choice exam. No study outside of this is required.

Content and Learning Goals

Gain an understanding of the key elements in matching food with wine.
Improve sales skills of the candidate in all areas of wine sales including restaurant, hotel, bar and bottle shop.

You will also learn:
– The main types and styles of wine
– Common wine grapes and their characteristics
– How to store and serve wine
– The principles of food and wine pairing
– How to describe wine using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)

Course Delivery

In Person Course 

An in-person course these are run in various cities in Australia. You will have 6 hours of face-to-face class in time with a highly qualified teacher leading you through the whole course. There is no outside study required. You will be provided with a complete selection of wines to taste as per WSET specifications. The exam will also be in-person and will be a 1 hour multiple choice.

Live online class (1)

Online – Fully Tutored

These are tutored online courses. They are run exactly the same as the in-person courses with set class times but are conducted over Zoom. No travel time lost!

You get to taste a nearly complete selection of wines as per WSET specifications in the form of 50ml samples. These arrive to your house a few days before the course commences. The exam is online at a date to be determined after the end of the course. The course is supported by Bacchus Academy, who offers WSET courses in-person and distance

Online Course (Self-Paced)

These courses are 100% online and completely self paced. There is no teacher but learning support is provided by Verena Nistler via email. Level 2 Award in Wines include one optional online tasting session and one Q&A session (via zoom). The exam is online at a date to be determined after the end of the course. These courses are run directly by WSET and not by Bacchus Academy.

Online (Self-Paced)

The course is delivered in English through the WSET Online Classroom platform. There is a set start and end date, but otherwise you can work through the coursework on your own schedule. You will have a Bacchus Expert available via email if you have any questions or need guidance.
