WSET® Level 1 Award in Wines is an introductory course prepares students for an entry-level job in hospitality or retail. Students learn to identify wine styles and understand wine and food pairings, making it an ideal starting point for wine enthusiasts and industry beginners.

Course Duration:  This self-paced online course delivers expert wine education without the pressure of a class schedule. It should take at least 6 hours to work though the the course material

Course Description

The WSET® Level 1 Award in Wines prepares students for an entry-level job in hospitality or retail. This course is designed for people who serve or sell wine in restaurants, hotels, bars and bottle shops.

It covers basic product knowledge and skills about wines and how to sell them. Your professional skills in sales and your knowledge of wines will be improved. This will increase your ability to assist your customers and improve wine sales for your employer.

The program is also an excellent introduction for the wine enthusiast who wants to learn more about wine styles, storage, service, and unlock the secret to matching the perfect wine with food. Confidently order wine from a restaurant wine list that will pair perfectly with your meal.

On successful completion, you will be issued with an internationally recognised certificate: Level 1 Award in Wines from the globally acclaimed, UK based, Wine and Spirit Education Trust.

Online Courses: 

These courses are 100% online.

There are no teachers for these courses however Bacchus Academy do offer an optional Q and A session for both WSET Level 1 in Wines and WSET Level 2 in Wines. For WSET Level 2 in Wines, an optional online tasting session is also available.

The exam is online at the end of the course on a date to be determined by the student.

Online Exam

This course is ALL online.  To complete the exam online, you will need a webcam, smartphone, good internet connection and suitable space.

If this is not possible, you are welcome to do an in-person exam with any of our in-person courses.

Key goals

  • To improve the wine knowledge of the candidate such that the candidate can converse with customers about the basic elements of wine and can better assist the customer with wine selection.
  • To gain an understanding of the key elements in matching food with wine.
  • To improve sales skills of the candidate in all areas of wine sales including restaurant, hotel, bar and bottle shop.

  • Common wine grapes and their characteristics
  • How to store and serve wine
  • The principles of food and wine pairing
  • How to describe wine using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)

Study Hours & Examination:

This course is self paced, therefore there are no set hours. The online modules should be followed in sequential order over four-week window. The course material should take about six hours in total to complete, not including the exam and revision.

Exam revision should take a minimum of 1 hour, you will then take the 45 minute exam of 30 multiple choice questions
