Course Duration: This qualification has a minimum requirement of 84 hours of study time, including 30 hours of guided study time with a two hour closed-book exam of 50 multiple-choice questions and a short-written answer paper as well as a 30 minute closed book blind tasting exam of two wines.

This qualification provides a detailed understanding of grape growing and winemaking for individuals seeking to delve deeper into the world of wines. Upon completion, you will be able to assess wines accurately and use your understanding to confidently explain wine style and quality. Upon successful completion, you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin and will be able to use the associated WSET-certified logo.

Learning Materials

The course includes a comprehensive tasting of wines in every session.

Each student will have access to a folder including exercises to work through and practice exams.

Unit One

  • The key factors in the production of wine: location, grape growing, winemaking, maturation and bottling
  • How these key factors influence the key characteristics of the principal of still wines of the world, sparkling wines of the world & fortified wines of the world
  • How to apply your understanding to explain wine style and quality

Unit Two

  • How to taste wines, describe their characteristics and evaluate their quality, using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)
  • Key labelling terms used to indicate origin, style and quality

Content

  • Factors that influence the main styles of wine
  • Characteristics of the principal grape varieties
  • Key labeling terms on a bottle to deduce the style and flavours of wines made in key regions and from the regions principal grape variety
  • Principles of food & wine matching in relation to the wine styles being tasted and discussed
  • WSET Systematic Approach to Tasting to produce descriptions of wines
  • Information and advice on the correct storage and service of wines

WSET® Level 3 examination:

Unit One

  • A closed book examination consisting of 50 multiple choice questions and a question paper requiring short written answers. This part will consist of four questions of twenty four marks each and one four mark question
  • The unit examination paper is to be completed in 2 hours.

Unit Two

  • Blind tasting of two wines. The practical tasting examination is to be completed in 30 minutes.
